Clubs
What’s in your golf bag? What type of golf clubs do you use?
Since any given player can only carry several golf clubs with him at any given time –14 golf clubs to be exact, hefty decisions are to be made on which golf clubs to bring. There are a good number of golf club types to choose from but they all fall on three major categories: Woods, Irons and Putters.
About Woods Golf Club
The reason they were called as Woods is because they are really made of wood before. The club head used to be made of wood materials Persimmon or maple wood although reinforced with steel braces to provide ample strength. Why they are made of wood is that metal had proved to be failingly heavy. Bear in mind though, that during this time, “metal” woods were already a concept but never gained enough support due to the reasons already stated –it’s awkwardly heavy.
Today however, the advent of lighter alloys, and technological techniques like using a heavier titanium plug on a lighter alloy redefined how Woods are manufactured.
Woods are the longest golf club. That is because they are used primarily to provide the longest distance shots. There are variations along the length, and the shorter woods are comparatively less powerful than the longer ones in terms of distance. Due to their make, function, and appearance, Woods are called by a number of nicknames. They are called Playclub, Brassie, Spoon, Baffy, Cleek but the most common name it had was the Driver. And ever since metal took over wood as the primary material, it’s now more called, and aptly, as golf club Driver.
Many consider the Woods club to be most interesting golf equipment in the golf club bag; such many golfers would buy the most expensive drivers within their budget and make do with sub par other clubs. That is because of the common notion that out driving your opponents off the tee allows the player extra par for the green maneuver. The first “big” driver that came out was Callaway’s 190cc Great Big Bertha, though it was already surpassed several times over as the biggest driver now in use is at 460cc
About Irons Golf Club
Many pro golfers can attest to a fact that anyone can use a mid Iron on the entire golf round and yet pose a worthy challenge. And that’s true, right after the initial drive at the tee; anyone possessing a fair golf swing control can make do with just a mid Iron. Fairway, bunkers, even approaches in the green, a 5 Irons can do a fair job, which is if you know how. The Irons golf club is indeed the most versatile golf club out of the bag. It can do everything except out driving a 460cc 45 inch Wood.
The Ping golf clubs are highlight examples of Irons that can overachieve. These golf irons are engineered to do just about anything and retaining the essential feel needed for irons.
About Putters
Putters are the only golf club in the bag that is focused on a specific function. Putters don’t have loft, or if it has, it is very minimal. The idea of putters is to hit a ball without making it fly. So it is very useful on shots on the green wherein feel and control are m,ore critical than distance and power.
Choosing Your Bag
Choosing golf clubs revolve on how much are you willing to spend, what is your weakness, and if your are brand loyal. And sometimes, knowing the lore of golf can be helpful: like its old news that Callaway golf clubs are the best drivers in the market, and Taylor Made golf clubs are among the best Irons in the market.
For those seeking to save more, they should look for dealers that sell used golf clubs or discount golf clubs. Cheap golf clubs aren’t necessarily bad quality, its just that some of them are second hand.
For golf club choices, there are literally hundreds to choose from. And a good number of them are equal in terms of performance. So always take your time to browse and check several offers. A dedicated searcher is always rewarded a good find.
